London Tattoo Convention 2009
The fifth London Tattoo Convention was held at Tobacco Dock, London. Over 200 body artists from different countries took part in the convention.
There is a huge amount of complementary entertainment and visual experiences to enjoy, including exhibitions, artistic events, live rock bands, burlesque performers from around the world, let alone a range of traditional East End themed bars, restaurants and food stalls. But the best part of attending can be seeing the visitors and their tattoos.

Toygers - Domestic Tiger Cats
Have you heard of the “Toyger?” The latest in designer cat breeds, this domestic cat, bred to resemble a tiger in body, coat and movement is still somewhat in development. There are approximately 400 Toygers in existence, being bred from descendants of a domestic Bengal Cat (which itself originates from a wild Asian Leopard Cat), crossed with other domestic cats.
25 breeders all around the world are working on perfecting the Toyger breed, to make the cats resemble tigers even more. The new species is already in demand and, although each specimen costs over $3,000, they have all been sold. Part of the profits go towards the conservation of wild tigers, the inspiration behind the Toygers. The breeder estimates will truly be tiger replicas by 2010, when the last tigers will disappear from zoos.

Steel Skull by Subodh Gupta
Made out of what looks like a bunch of kitchen utensils, this stainless steel skull sculpture, by Subodh Gupta, is one of the weirdest artworks I’ve seen recently. I’m sure it has some kind of meaning, but so far I haven’t been able to figure it out.

Burning Man Festival 2009 in the Nevada Desert
Burning Man is an eight-day annual event held in the Black Rock Desert, in Northern Nevada. It takes its name from the ritual burning of a large wooden effigy on Saturday evening. The event is described by many participants as an experiment in community, radical self-expression, and radical self-reliance.
The event was open from the last Monday in August until Labor Day (August 31st to September 7th 2009, so yesterday). In 2008, 49,599 people participated in Burning Man, in 1986, it was only 20 people on a small beach in San Francisco.
It is all about art, music and performance and this year, the theme was “Evolution”.
Geese’s Day
This weird festival takes place every year in northern Spanish Basque village of Lekeitio. In this Spanish Fiesta brave contestants have to wrench the head off a goose while being plunged into the water.
Geese are strung up on a wire, above the town’s harbor, as young men approach in boats and try to grab them. They are then lifted up into the air and plunged into the water repeatedly, until they pull the head off the goose or fall into the water.
The geese are dead, don’t worry. But in former times they used to be alive.
